The USB or Bluetooth subsystem detects the mouse and the operating system then just handles the device interaction. There are no mouse drivers to list as they are built-in to the operating system. You can press option + menu > System Information, and the panel that appears, you select Bluetooth, or USB to see more detail about the connected devices.
B) even if all mice are handled by software from Apple, whatever handles the mice is the driver. So, if this is the case, what is the software that handles it? What is the system extension name? Or what file(s) contain the software?
Driver Mouse For Mac
With Big Sur, you cannot install traditional kernel drivers as once was possible for two reasons: 1) the operating system now resides on a code-signed, read-only partition, and 2) Apple has abandoned the old device driver format that was used for years in macOS as kernel extensions.
For the last decade or so, I have only used Apple mice and one Logitech mouse that had it's own plug-n-play USB radio dongle that required no driver installation. Apple has its own AppleUSB*.kext and IOUSB*.kext support in /System/Library/Extensions in Big Sur.
Due to recent Mac OS update, our driver must be updated to maintain compatibility. We need a driver development kit from Apple but they have not replied to our request even after repeated emails. Therefore our driver development is unable to proceed. We apologize for the delay and will continue to contact Apple for the resource. Alternatively, the third party software USB Overdrive www.usboverdrive.com may be used to program the buttons on VerticalMouse. (Evoluent is not affiliated with USB Overdrive.)
According to different connecting technology, there are two types of wireless mouse. One uses advanced 2.4 GHz wireless connectivity with a tiny USB nano receiver, another type uses Bluetooth wireless technology. I've had my Logitech MX Revolution for several years now, and I still like it a lot. However, when I first installed the software that came with it, Logitech's drivers required Application Enhancer (APE, which I don't want), and they kind of sucked anyway. They were glitchy and not particularly user-friendly or Mac-like.
I looked around for third-party drivers, and pretty much the best thing I found was SteerMouse, which isn't any more Mac-like than Logitech's, and is semi-poorly translated from Japanese, but is more flexible and doesn't require APE. However, it's not free.
In the time since then, I've just been using Mac OS X's default mouse drivers, but that doesn't allow me to use the nice features of the mouse like the forward/back buttons, thumb wheel, horizontal scrolling speed adjustment, auto-activation of the free-spinning scroll wheel, etc. So, now I've brought the question here: what good, free Logitech-compatible mouse drivers/software exist for Mac OS X?
I was saddened that the Logitech Control Center (LCC) doesn't support my M-100 corded optical mouse. It does support my V450 cordless optical mouse and works quite well with it. but I'm back to using the M100 and all the features work perfectly without Logitech Control Center.
What I did was downloaded a trial version of USB Overdrive 3.0.1, installed it, configured the wheel button to open my Dashboard and it worked perfectly. I then considered that the driver was going to cost me more than the mouse so I uninstalled USB Overdrive and rebooted my system.
I have a new 2021 Dell Precision 5550 laptop (basically a beefed up XPS 15) on which I wanted to use an Apple Magic Mouse. It's no problem adding the mouse as a Bluetooth device under Windows 10, but I discovered that I lost the scrolling functionality when doing so. You can pay a yearly fee for software from some third party vendors to solve this problem, but that seemed absurd. Since I couldn't find any solutions on this message board, I thought I'd post one here.
I found a proper fix. The original solution does not allow the scroll to work because the currently available mouse driver on the apple website is an old one, from 2011. Since I have a MacBook I was able to download a more recent version of the driver from Bootcamp Assistant, 2015 version, and when installed on my other windows PC the scroll works perfectly! Now, I can share this driver with anyone that wants it, but I don't know what website to upload it to? It's an .exe file so lots of services block it thinking it's a virus.
I did this but the magic mouse won't scroll. Further research has not solved it except with more added 3rd party unknown software. The reason I am back on Dell is because apple makes it SO HARD to share with other platforms. Witness trying to get a photo out of "photo". It should be drag and drop but instead it's an export procedure. I'm happy to be totally back in Windows and out of Apple computers. I still use the ipad because there still doesn't appear to be a good competitor for that unfortunately.

To fix a skipping mouse cursor, try using the mouse on a different surface. The ideal surface for a mouse is an even-toned mousepad, but most decent mice can track on most hard surfaces. The exception is with glass, as it is a terrible surface for a laser mouse to track on. Multi-color surfaces, like wood with a prominent dark grain, will sometimes confuse even modern laser mice.
For mice with power switches, try cycling the power. Turn the mouse off, wait ten seconds, and turn the mouse back on. That will refresh the wireless connection and give a wireless mouse the opportunity to establish a more stable communication channel.
Troubleshooting could involve something as easy as removing your mouse from the configuration utility, restarting the Mac, and then adding the mouse back again. Some mice also require driver updates to help ensure smooth connectivity with up-to-date macOS hardware, so having this software installed can be incredibly helpful.
